Allianz Travel Insurance Review
A reputable company, and kids under 18 travel free. The weak spot is medical coverage: $50,000 to $75,000 when plans at the same price carry $100,000 to $250,000.
- Families on a domestic trip (kids 17 and under are free on Prime and Premier)
- Anyone who wants a standalone rental car plan
- Frequent travelers who want an annual plan
- Cruises and trips outside the US, where $50,000 to $75,000 of medical is thin
- Anyone who wants cancel for any reason on a budget plan
- Pennsylvania residents counting on the free-kids benefit

| Plan | Emergency medical | Evacuation | Cancel for any reason | Kids free |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OneTrip Basic | $10,000 | $50,000 | No | No |
| OneTrip Prime | $50,000 | $500,000 | Upgrade, 80% back | Yes |
| OneTrip Premier | $75,000 | $1,000,000 | Upgrade, 80% back | Yes |
For a cruise or a trip abroad the medical column is the problem. For a domestic family trip the free kids can make Prime the cheapest option.
Top reasons to buy
- Kids 17 and under are covered free on OneTrip Prime and Premier when traveling with a parent or grandparent (not in Pennsylvania). For a family that is real money.
- Strong evacuation limits: $500,000 on Prime and $1,000,000 on Premier.
- A standalone Rental Car Protector plan, and a good range of annual plans including one built for business travel.
Drawbacks
- Emergency medical is $50,000 on Prime and $75,000 on Premier. For a cruise or a trip outside the US I look for $100,000 at minimum, and several plans at the same price carry $250,000 or more.
- Cancel Anytime, Allianz’s cancel-for-any-reason upgrade, is only offered on Prime and Premier and costs extra. It refunds 80 percent of your prepaid trip cost.
- Allianz sells direct only, so you cannot see it next to other plans. You have to price it separately and compare by hand.
Bottom line
Allianz is a solid company and the free-kids benefit is real value for families on a domestic trip. If you are cruising or leaving the country, the medical limit is the problem. Plans with two to five times the medical coverage sell for about the same premium, so price your trip and compare before you buy.
Full Allianz Travel Insurance Review
Summary: Allianz is one of the biggest names in travel insurance and a company that pays claims. The plans themselves are middle of the road. The medical limits are lower than comparable plans, and while Allianz now offers a cancel-for-any-reason upgrade, it is limited to two plans. For a cruise or an international trip I can usually find more coverage for the same money. For a domestic family trip with kids, Allianz is worth a look because the kids are free.

Who Allianz is
Allianz Global Assistance, formerly Access America, has sold travel insurance in the US under the Allianz name since 2012. It is part of Allianz SE, one of the largest insurers in the world. Stability and claims-paying ability are not a concern here.
The plans fall into three groups: single-trip plans (the ones most travelers buy), annual plans for people who take several trips a year, and a standalone rental car plan.
What Allianz travel insurance covers
Like every travel insurance plan, the single-trip plans cover trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, lost or delayed baggage, travel delays, and 24-hour assistance. The differences between plans, and between Allianz and its competitors, are in the limits.
The medical limits
This is the reason Allianz does not rate higher with me. OneTrip Basic carries $10,000 of emergency medical coverage. Prime carries $50,000. Premier carries $75,000. Those are Allianz’s own published figures.
A hospital stay abroad, or a medical evacuation from a cruise ship, can pass $50,000 quickly. When I compare plans for a cruise or an international trip I look for $100,000 at minimum, and plans priced about the same as OneTrip Prime carry $100,000 to $250,000. Evacuation is a different story: Allianz’s $500,000 on Prime and $1,000,000 on Premier are strong.
Cancel Anytime, Allianz’s cancel-for-any-reason upgrade
For years Allianz had no cancel-for-any-reason option at all. That has changed. Cancel Anytime is now a paid upgrade on OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier and refunds 80 percent of your non-refundable trip cost if you cancel for a reason the base plan does not cover. That percentage is competitive; most cancel-for-any-reason upgrades refund 75 percent. It is not available on Basic, Emergency Medical, or Cancellation Plus.
Cancel-for-any-reason upgrades everywhere are time-sensitive: they have to be added within a set number of days of your first trip payment. Allianz’s pre-existing condition waiver works the same way, with a 14-day window from your first payment or deposit.
Kids travel free
On OneTrip Prime and Premier, children 17 and under are covered at no charge when traveling with a parent or grandparent (Pennsylvania residents excepted). Most competitors charge per traveler, so for a family of four this can be the difference that makes Allianz the cheapest option on a domestic trip where the medical limit matters less.
How much does Allianz cost?
Allianz prices in the same range as comparable plans, roughly 4 to 10 percent of the trip cost depending on your age and how much you are insuring. The point is not that Allianz is expensive. It is that for the same premium, other reputable companies give you two to five times the medical coverage. The only way to know for your trip is to price it: enter your trip once and every plan comes back side by side.
Allianz travel insurance plans
Single trip plans
OneTrip Basic
The economy plan. Trip cancellation and interruption up to $10,000, emergency medical $10,000, evacuation $50,000, baggage $500. For someone who wants something rather than nothing on a short domestic trip.
OneTrip Prime
Allianz’s most popular plan. Cancellation up to $100,000, interruption up to $150,000, emergency medical $50,000, evacuation $500,000, baggage $1,000, travel delay $800. Kids 17 and under are free. Cancel Anytime is available as an upgrade.

The top plan. Cancellation up to $200,000, interruption up to $300,000, emergency medical $75,000, evacuation $1,000,000, baggage $2,000, travel delay $1,600. Kids free, Cancel Anytime available, and more covered reasons for cancellation than Prime.
OneTrip Emergency Medical
Post-departure benefits only: emergency medical, evacuation, delays and baggage, with no trip cancellation coverage. For a trip with little or no prepaid cost.
OneTrip Cancellation Plus
The opposite: cancellation and interruption only, no medical. For domestic travelers whose health insurance already works where they are going.

AllTrips Executive
Higher cancellation and interruption limits plus business equipment coverage, built for people who travel for work.
Rental car plan
OneTrip Rental Car Protector
Primary coverage for collision, loss and damage to a rental car in most states, with 24-hour assistance. Usually far cheaper than the counter waiver.
Allianz travel insurance FAQs
Is Allianz legitimate?
Yes. Allianz Global Assistance is owned by Allianz SE, one of the largest insurers in the world, and it pays claims. My criticism is of the medical limits on the individual plans, not the company.
Does Allianz offer cancel for any reason coverage?
Yes, as a paid upgrade called Cancel Anytime on the OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier plans. It refunds 80 percent of your non-refundable trip cost. It is not offered on the other Allianz plans.
Which Allianz plan is best?
OneTrip Prime is the best value in the Allianz lineup for most travelers, mainly because kids are free and evacuation is $500,000. Premier raises the medical limit to $75,000 and doubles most post-departure limits, which is worth paying for on a long international trip but not on a short domestic one.
Is Allianz good for cruises?
The evacuation coverage is good. The medical limit is the concern: $50,000 on Prime and $75,000 on Premier is below what I want for a cruise, where care on board and in a foreign port is paid out of pocket first. Several plans at the same price carry $250,000 or more.
Summary
Allianz is a well-known company with fine plans, and the free-kids benefit makes OneTrip Prime a real contender for a family trip inside the US. For a cruise or an international trip, the medical limits are the reason I usually point people to equally reputable companies that give more coverage for the same premium. Price your trip and compare; it takes about a minute.
- The pre-existing condition waiver only applies if you buy within 14 days of your first trip payment or deposit.
- Cancel Anytime has to be added when you buy, and only OneTrip Prime and Premier offer it.
- The free-kids benefit does not apply to policies issued to Pennsylvania residents.
- You have 15 days after purchase to cancel the policy for a full refund if you have not started the trip.
