Flaws but not dealbreakers

Cancel for any reason is only on Pathway Premium, and it is not available to New York residents.
Pathway Essential has no pre-existing condition waiver and only $25,000 of medical with a $100 deductible.
The lineup changed in August 2025. If you have read older reviews of Safe Travels Voyager or Explorer, those plans are no longer what Trawick sells.

Bottom line

Trawick’s Pathway lineup is a good one, and Pathway Plus is the plan I would point most people to: primary medical, a sensible evacuation limit and a 14-day waiver window at a mid-range price. Premium adds the limits and the cancel-for-any-reason option for a cruise or an expensive trip. Essential is a budget plan for a short domestic trip and nothing more. Cancel for any reason at 75 percent is built in if you buy within 7 days of your deposit, with cancellation up to $10,000 and $15,000 of medical. For people whose main concern is flexibility on a modest trip.

Why primary medical matters

Most travel insurance medical benefits are secondary: the insurer pays after your own health plan. Primary medical means Trawick pays first, which is faster and simpler when you are dealing with a hospital abroad. All three Pathway plans are primary, which is rare at Essential’s price.

Cancel for any reason

The cancel-for-any-reason upgrade is on Pathway Premium only. It pays 75 percent of the non-refundable trip cost, has to be bought within 21 days of your initial deposit, requires you to insure the full trip cost, and is not available to New York residents. If flexibility is what you want on a smaller trip, Safe Travels AnyReason builds it in at 75 percent with a 7-day purchase window.

Pre-existing conditions and the free look

Pathway Plus waives the pre-existing condition exclusion if you buy within 14 days of your initial deposit; Pathway Premium within 21 days. Pathway Essential has no waiver at all. The free look is 14 days in most states (10 to 30 depending on where you live), during which you can cancel for a full refund if you have not departed or filed a claim.
