Allianz vs Trawick: Which Travel Insurance Is Better?

In shortTrawick's Pathway plans carry primary medical at every level, $100,000 on Plus and $200,000 on Premium against Allianz's $50,000 and $75,000, so Trawick is the better buy for a trip abroad and Premium the better buy for a cruise. Allianz wins a domestic family trip on free children and pays 80 percent on Cancel Anytime against Trawick's 75. Trawick is on the comparison; Allianz is not.

Allianz and Trawick sell to the same traveler and answer the same question differently: Allianz puts its money into the free-kids rule on Prime and Premier, Trawick into primary medical on every plan. This page puts the plans side by side from the insurers’ own plan documents, says which one wins for each kind of trip, and shows the numbers that decide it.

Where each one wins

What it costs

Allianz sells only direct and is not on the comparison. Trawick is on the CoverTrip comparison, priced next to the other plans when you enter the trip once. Travel insurance is priced by the trip cost, the ages of the travelers and the trip length, and a package plan usually costs 4 to 8 percent of the trip cost, so the way to compare these two is to enter the trip once, note the price of a plan with the limits you need, and hold Allianz’s direct quote against it. Same price on the comparison as buying direct.

What the plans say

Allianz’s strengths are the free-kids rule on Prime and Premier, an 80 percent Cancel Anytime refund, annual plans and a standalone rental car plan; its weak spot is the medical limits: $50,000 on Prime and $75,000 on Premier, thin for a cruise or a trip abroad. Trawick’s strengths are primary medical on every plan, Premium’s $200,000 of medical and $1,000,000 of evacuation, a 21-day window on Premium; its weak spot is Essential’s $25,000 medical limit with a $100 deductible, and no free-kids benefit. Both refund 100 percent of the insured trip cost for a listed cancellation reason, both include a 24-hour assistance line, and both are underwritten by large insurers; the difference between them is the limits and the upgrade rules above, not the paper.

Questions people also ask

Is Trawick better than Allianz?

For a trip abroad, yes: every Pathway plan carries primary medical, and Plus and Premium carry $100,000 and $200,000 against Allianz’s $50,000 and $75,000. Allianz is the better buy for a domestic family trip, where children are free on Prime and Premier and the medical limit matters less.

Which is better for a cruise, Allianz or Trawick?

Trawick Pathway Premium: $200,000 of primary medical and $1,000,000 of evacuation, with the pre-existing condition waiver when bought within 21 days. Allianz Premier carries $75,000 of medical, thin for a ship far from a hospital.

Does Trawick have cancel for any reason?

On Pathway Premium only, refunding 75 percent, added within 21 days of the deposit, not available in New York. Allianz’s Cancel Anytime refunds 80 percent on OneTrip Prime and Premier and has to be added when you buy, within 14 days of the first payment.
