Types of Travel Insurance: Which One Do You Need?
There are six types of travel insurance, and most travelers need exactly one of them. If you have money on the line that you cannot get back, a cruise, a tour, flights and hotels paid ahead, you need a package plan. If you have nothing prepaid to lose and are going abroad, you need a travel medical plan. The other four types are for narrower needs.
This guide lists the six types with what each covers and who buys it, compares the three most people consider side by side, and gives a situation-by-situation answer to “which type do I need”. Each type has its own full guide, linked from the table.
The six types of travel insurance
| Type | What it covers | Who buys it | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Package plan (trip insurance) | Cancellation, interruption, emergency medical, evacuation, delays, bags and 24-hour assistance, all in one policy. The only type that covers trip cancellation. | Almost everyone: a cruise, a tour, a resort, flights and hotels paid ahead. Most travel insurance sold is this type. | Trip insurance guide |
| Travel medical plan | Medical bills and evacuation abroad. Little or no cancellation coverage. Priced by the day and by age. | Travelers with nothing prepaid to lose, long stays abroad, students, visitors to the United States. | Travel medical guide |
| Medical evacuation membership | Arranges and pays for air medical transport to the hospital you choose. Not insurance; pays no hospital bills. | People with a serious condition, travelers far from good hospitals, people who want to be treated at home no matter what. | Evacuation guide |
| Annual (multi-trip) plan | Medical and evacuation on every trip in a year, with modest cancellation limits on some plans. | People who take three or more trips a year. | Annual plan guide |
| Travel accident plan | A cash payment for accidental death or serious injury on a trip or a flight. No medical, no cancellation. | Frequent flyers who want term-life style coverage while traveling. | Flight accident insurance |
| Specialty coverage | One risk only: rental car damage, kidnap and ransom for corporate travel, medical tourism, term life while abroad. | Travelers with one specific gap that a package plan does not fill. | Rental car, medical tourism |
Package plan vs travel medical plan vs annual plan
These are the three types people weigh against each other. The first row is the one that settles it: only a package plan covers trip cancellation.
| Package plan | Travel medical plan | Annual plan | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trip cancellation | Yes, 100 percent of the insured trip cost | No, or a token amount | Limited on most plans; check the per-trip cap |
| Emergency medical | Yes, $10,000 to $500,000 by plan | Yes, you choose the limit | Yes, fixed by the plan |
| Evacuation | Yes, $50,000 to $1,000,000 by plan | Yes; Seven Corners Travel Medical carries $500,000 | Yes |
| Pre-existing condition waiver | Yes on 53 of 54 plans, if bought within 14 days of the first payment | No; some plans pay a limited amount for a sudden flare-up | Varies by plan |
| Cancel For Any Reason | Available as an upgrade on many plans | No | No |
| How it is priced | By trip cost, trip length and ages | By the day and by age | One price for the year, by age |
| Where to buy | On the comparison, side by side | From the insurer | On the comparison or from the insurer |
Which type of travel insurance do you need?
Find your situation in the left column.
| Your situation | The type you need | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A cruise, a tour or a resort paid in advance | Package plan | Cancellation is the money at risk, and a package plan is the only type that covers it. It carries the medical and evacuation limits a ship or a foreign port needs. |
| Flights and hotels abroad, mostly non-refundable | Package plan | Same reason. Price it with $100,000 of medical and $250,000 of evacuation as the floor. |
| A trip abroad with almost nothing prepaid | Travel medical plan | There is nothing to cancel, so pay only for the medical side, by the day. |
| Three or more trips a year | Annual plan, plus a package plan for any big prepaid trip | The annual plan covers the medical side all year; a package plan protects the one expensive trip. |
| A serious condition, or a trip far from good hospitals | Package plan plus a medevac membership | The plan pays the hospital; the membership flies you to the hospital you choose. |
| A domestic trip with refundable bookings | Possibly nothing | Your health insurance works at home and a refundable booking has nothing to insure. |
| A study-abroad semester or a long stay | Travel medical plan built for it | Student and long-stay plans run up to a year and can be extended. |
| Visitors to the United States | Travel medical plan for visitors | US hospitals do not accept foreign health insurance; a visitor plan pays them directly. |
Once you know the type, the choice within it is a matter of two numbers. For a package plan, set the emergency medical and evacuation limits you want, then compare every plan that clears them on price. The beginner’s guide walks through that in three steps.
Names that mean the same thing
Travel insurance has more names than products. Trip insurance, vacation insurance, trip cancellation insurance, comprehensive travel insurance and a package plan are all the same product. Travel medical insurance, travel health insurance and international medical insurance are the same product. Medevac, medical evacuation coverage and emergency evacuation coverage are the same benefit. A cruise line’s “vacation protection” and an airline’s “trip protection” are package plans sold by the seller, usually with lower medical limits than the plans on the comparison; the cruise travel insurance guide shows the numbers side by side.

Two things people ask for as if they were plans are actually add-ons to a package plan. Cancel For Any Reason refunds 75 percent of the trip cost on most plans (50 on some) if you cancel for a reason the policy does not list. The pre-existing condition waiver removes the exclusion for a condition that changed recently. Both have to be bought within 14 days of your first trip payment, and neither is sold on its own. Types of travel insurance FAQs
What are the main types of travel insurance?
Six: package plans (also called trip insurance), which cover cancellation, medical, evacuation, delays and bags together; travel medical plans, which cover medical and evacuation abroad only; medical evacuation memberships; annual multi-trip plans; travel accident plans; and specialty coverage for one risk such as rental cars.
Which type of travel insurance do most people buy?
The package plan. It is what people mean when they say travel insurance, and it is the only type that covers trip cancellation. Everything else on this page is for a narrower need.
Is trip insurance the same as travel insurance?
Yes. Trip insurance, vacation insurance, trip cancellation insurance, comprehensive travel insurance and a package plan are all names for the same thing: one policy that bundles cancellation, medical, evacuation, delays and bags.
Can I buy trip cancellation insurance on its own?
No. Cancellation coverage is only sold inside a package plan. If cancellation is what you want, you are buying a package plan, and the medical and evacuation benefits come with it.
What is the difference between travel medical insurance and a package plan?
A travel medical plan covers medical bills and evacuation abroad and little else, and is priced by the day. A package plan adds cancellation, interruption, delays and bags, and is priced as a percentage of the trip cost. If you have prepaid money at risk, you want the package plan.
Do I need a medical evacuation membership if my plan has evacuation coverage?
Usually not. The plan already pays to move you to a hospital that can treat you and then home. A membership adds the right to be flown to the hospital you choose, which matters most for a serious condition or a long trip through places with thin medical care.
Is an annual plan cheaper than buying a plan per trip?
For someone taking three or more trips a year it usually is, on the medical side. Annual plans carry small cancellation limits, so an expensive prepaid trip still wants its own package plan.

Summary
Six types, one decision. A package plan if you have prepaid money at risk, which is most trips. A travel medical plan if you have nothing to cancel and are going abroad. An annual plan if you travel constantly, a medevac membership if being treated at home matters most, and an accident or specialty plan only for a gap nothing else fills. Pick the type, set the two medical numbers, then compare on price.
