Summary: Berkshire Hathaway has three plans to choose from, but none stand out as a great choice for any trip/traveler. For example, their most popular plan ExactCare has very low emergency medical coverage of $25,000. Similar plans at the same price have between $100,000-$500,000 of coverage. Also, only their premium plan LuxuryCare offers the option for Cancel For Reason (CFAR) coverage. Other companies offer this with more plans.
Berkshire offers plans in the popular “Good, better, best” format. Their plans are called ExactCare Basic, ExactCare, and LuxuryCare. Each plan varies by coverage, coverage limits, and options.
Better alternatives to Berkshire Hathaway
Berkshire has decent plans. However, for the same money or even less, there are better plans.
Travel Insured offers a plan called Worldwide Trip Protector that has better coverage for a comparable price. This plan has better hurricane & weather coverage, includes Cancel For Work Reasons, includes non-medical evacuation, and covers pre-existing conditions. That is a lot of extra coverage for a similar cost.
Seven Corners has a plan called RoundTrip Choice with $500,000 medical coverage, optional CFAR coverage, and far better weather & hurricane coverage.
Berkshire Hathaway is a very well known financial company. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection is part of Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance which is part of Berkshire Hathaway (of Warren Buffet fame).
Berkshire Hathaway is a reputable company that complies with the Zero Complaint Policy.
Berkshire’s travel insurance plans work well for most travelers. These are the plans you would buy for a vacation, cruise, tour, or any other trip where you are worried about losing money for a canceled trip.
Like all travel insurance plans, they cover:
Trawick has the optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage available with one plans: LuxuryCare.
Some companies, such as Allianz, don’t offer this upgrade on any plans. Even though it is optional, I believe it is better to have the option.
Travelers like the peace-of-mind this coverage provides. It gives you a lot of flexibility in cancelling your trip and still getting most of your money back.
All Berkshire plans covers Covid-19 for both trip cancellation and emergency medical expenses.
Berkshire Hathaway treats Coronavirus like any other sickness when it comes to trip cancellation coverage. Trip cancellation covers cancellations if someone gets sick or injured before the trip and cannot travel. This is the most popular reason for trip cancellation, and travelers make claims for this all the time. It might be a child with the flu. Or a parent having a stroke and you need to care for them.
In the case of Covid, if you get sick before departure and your doctor advises you to cancel, this is a covered reason for cancelling. You would receive any trip expenses you lose as a reimbursement from the insurance company. Physicians provide verification for this all the time.
Similarly, Berkshire’s plans cover Covid as they would any other sickness for emergency medical care. If you are traveling abroad and get sick or have an illness, you are covered for medical care costs.
Berkshire tends to be similar in price to comparable plans. Since they have less coverage in a couple important areas, I recommend other companies like Travel Insured or Seven Corners.
Here are the most popular comparable plans that we’ll compare:
Berkshire Hathaway ExactCare
This plan only has $25,000 of emergency medical coverage. Similar priced plans have much higher coverage for this. This is not as important for domestic travel, but when going abroad I recommend at least $100,000. This plan also does not offer the optional Cancel For Any Reason upgrade.
Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector
This is a plan with medical limit of $100,000. This is an adequate amount of travel medical coverage for most trips. Travel Insured has better hurricane & weather coverage. This plan also has the option to upgrade with Cancel For Any Reason.
Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice
Most coverage is similar, but this plan has emergency medical coverage up to $500,000. This is far higher than similar plans. Also has Cancel For Any Reason available
Now let’s look at pricing based on different types of travelers and trips:
This is a seven day trip, two travelers both aged 45, with a trip cost of $3,500
Here, Berkshire is higher than the comparable plans, and it has less coverage in important areas. I would recommend either other company.
This is a seven day trip, a family of four (ages 45, 45, 12, 10) with a trip cost of $6,500
In this case, Berkshire is still higher than Travel Insured. It is less than Seven Corners, as they price plans differently for four travelers.
This is a 14-day trip, two travelers both aged 70, with a trip cost of $4,500
This is not even close. Berkshire is double the cost for older travelers, for less coverage.
ExactCare is Berkshire’s budget-friendly travel protection plan. This plan includes Trip Cancellation and Interruption and only $15,000 coverage for Emergency Medical Expense. Even for budget-minded plans, there are better options.
ExactCare is Berkshire’s middle range plan, with $50,000 of medical coverage. This plan still doesn’t have the optional CFAR upgrade available, and there are better choices for the money.
This is Berkshire’s premium plan. The medical coverage finally hits $100,000 which is the same as lower cost plans. Still not worth the cost
Is Berkshire Hathaway a good company?
They are a reputable company with decent plans, but there are better choices for the money.
Which Berkshire plan is best?
ExactCare is their most popular plan, but again there are better choices for the money.
