Does travel insurance cover flight delays?

In shortYes. A package plan pays for a hotel, meals and local transport once a delay passes the plan's threshold, which is 3 hours on the best plans and 6 to 24 hours on the rest, up to $500 to $2,500 per person. Missed connection pays to catch up with a cruise or tour that left without you. Baggage delay pays for clothes and toiletries once a bag is 12 or 24 hours late. You need the airline's written confirmation of the delay and receipts for what you spent.

Three benefits, one problem

A delay costs you three things: somewhere to sleep and eat while you wait, the trip you are now late for, and the clothes in the bag that did not make it. A package plan has a benefit for each.

Benefit What it pays for When it starts Typical limit
Travel delay A hotel, meals and local transport while you wait, and on many plans the cost of catching up to your trip. After the delay passes the plan’s threshold: 3 hours on the best plans, 6 or 12 on most, up to 24 on some. $500 to $2,500 per person, often with a daily cap.
Missed connection The extra fare and the unused part of the trip when a delay makes you miss a cruise or tour departure. After the plan’s threshold, usually 3 hours. $500 to $1,500.
Baggage delay Clothes and toiletries while your bag catches up with you. After the bag is late by the plan’s waiting period, usually 12 or 24 hours. $100 to $500.

Every plan puts the same conditions on them. The delay has to be caused by something the policy names: the carrier, the weather, a strike, a mechanical problem, lost documents, a traffic accident on the way to the airport. It has to last longer than the plan’s threshold. And you need the paperwork: the airline’s written confirmation of the delay and its cause, and receipts for what you spent.

The threshold matters more than the limit

Most delays are a few hours long, so a plan that starts paying at 3 hours is worth more in practice than a plan with a bigger limit that starts at 12. Read the threshold first, the daily cap second, and the total limit third. A plan that pays $2,000 but only $150 a day, after 12 hours, is a thinner benefit than it looks.

What a delay claim looks like

Your flight is cancelled for weather and the next one is in the morning. You book a hotel near the airport, eat dinner and breakfast, and keep every receipt. At the counter you ask the airline for written confirmation of the cancellation and its cause; most airlines email one on request. Back home you file the receipts and the confirmation with the insurer, and travel delay pays them up to the daily cap and the plan limit. If the delay also meant you missed the ship, missed connection pays the flight to the next port.

What is not covered

A flight you missed because you left home late or spent too long at security. A delay shorter than the threshold. A delay the airline caused by a schedule change it announced before you bought. And anything without a receipt or a confirmation, because the claim is paid against the paperwork.

What the plans say

Every one of the 54 plans on the comparison includes travel delay, most include missed connection, and nearly every one includes baggage delay. The travel delay threshold runs from 3 hours to 24 hours by plan, the limit from $500 to $2,500, and the daily cap is usually $150 to $250. Baggage delay waits 12 or 24 hours and pays $100 to $500. The coverage guide has the benefit-by-benefit table.

Questions people also ask

How long does a flight have to be delayed for travel insurance to pay?

It depends on the plan’s threshold: 3 hours on the best plans, 6 or 12 hours on most, and 24 hours on a few. A shorter threshold is worth more than a bigger limit, because most delays are a few hours long. The comparison shows each plan’s threshold before you buy.

Does travel insurance cover a delay that makes me miss my connection?

Yes, in two ways. Travel delay pays for the hotel and meals while you wait. Missed connection pays the extra fare to catch up with a cruise or tour that left without you, once the delay passes the plan’s threshold. Neither pays if you missed the flight through your own lateness.

Does travel insurance cover a delayed bag?

Yes. Baggage delay pays for clothes and toiletries once the bag is late by the plan’s waiting period, usually 12 or 24 hours, up to a limit of $100 to $500 on most plans. Keep the receipts and the airline’s delay report; the claim is paid against them.
