The Best Travel Insurance Comparison Sites of 2026, Ranked by a Licensed Agent (Including Ours)

The short answer: for most people, Squaremouth. It carries 20 insurers, prices every plan for your trip in about a minute, adds nothing to the price, and backs every policy with its Zero Complaint Service. InsureMyTrip is the one to use if you want Travel Guard or Nationwide, which Squaremouth does not carry, and it has been doing this longer than anyone. CoverTrip, our own site, runs on Squaremouth’s engine, so you get the same 20 insurers, the same prices and the same service, plus a licensed agent’s picks and reviews on top. TravelInsurance.com is a solid fourth with fewer insurers.

The price is the same on all four, and the same as buying from the insurer. Travel insurance rates are filed with state regulators, so no comparison site can sell a plan for less than another. What differs is which insurers are on the shelf, what the site shows you about each plan, and who picks up the phone when a claim goes wrong. One of the four sites is ours, so the ranking below says plainly what we add and what we do not.

Key takeaways

  • Best overall is Squaremouth. 20 insurers, more than 201,000 verified customer reviews, no markup, phones 8 am to 10 pm Eastern every day, and the Zero Complaint Service: free claims advocacy if a claim goes wrong.
  • InsureMyTrip is the oldest (founded 2000) and carries 18 insurers, including two Squaremouth does not: Travel Guard and Nationwide. Its Anytime Advocates help with claims and appeals.
  • CoverTrip is Squaremouth’s engine with a licensed agent on top. Same insurers, same prices, same service. What we add is the advice: ranked picks priced for real trips every month, and reviews of the companies that are not on the engine, like Allianz and Travel Guard.
  • The price is the same everywhere. Rates are filed with state regulators. A site that promises a lower price than another is promising something the law does not allow.
  • Two things to know about every site: each one has a plan it has a reason to favor (Squaremouth founded Tin Leg; InsureMyTrip sells its own accident plan as an add-on), and none of them pays your claim. The insurer does. The site’s job is to help when the insurer says no.

What a comparison site is, and what it is not

A travel insurance comparison site is a licensed agency that sells plans from many insurers on one screen. You enter the trip once, every plan it carries comes back priced for your ages and dates, and you buy on the site. The insurer underwrites the policy, pays the claim, and pays the site a commission. You pay the filed rate, nothing more.

It is not a discount shop: nobody can sell a filed rate for less. It is not the insurer: when something goes wrong on the trip you call the insurer’s assistance line, and when a claim is denied the insurer made that call. And it is not the whole market: each site carries the insurers it has signed. Allianz and American Express sell direct only, and Travel Guard is on InsureMyTrip and TravelInsurance.com but not on Squaremouth or CoverTrip. The honest way to compare the sites is on four things: who is on the shelf, what you can see about each plan before you buy, what it costs you (nothing, on all four), and what happens when a claim goes wrong.

How we picked

The sites. The four US comparison sites that sell plans from several insurers, show every price side by side, and let you buy on the spot: Squaremouth, InsureMyTrip, CoverTrip and TravelInsurance.com. Sites that list a handful of affiliate links without pricing them are not comparison sites and are not here.

The four criteria, in order. 1. How many insurers, and which. 2. What you can see before you buy: medical and evacuation limits, the waiver window, the policy document, customer reviews from people who bought. 3. What happens when a claim is denied: who at the site will take it up with the insurer. 4. Hours, fees and the fine print, including which plans the site has a reason to favor.

The judgment. A licensed travel insurance agent since 2006 made the calls, and one of the four sites is his. CoverTrip runs on Squaremouth’s engine, so it cannot honestly rank above Squaremouth on anything the engine does. It is ranked on what sits on top of the engine.

The money. CoverTrip earns a commission when you buy through our comparison. We earn nothing when you buy on Squaremouth, InsureMyTrip or TravelInsurance.com. Every figure below was read from each site on the dates above and is listed in the sources.

The four sites, ranked

Best overall

1. Squaremouth

Insurers20on the shelf
Reviews201,000+verified, from buyers
Denied claimZero Complaint Serviceclaims advocates
Phones8 am to 10 pm ETseven days a week

Founded 2003, St. Petersburg, Florida, and by its own description the largest travel insurance marketplace in the United States. 20 insurers. More than 201,000 verified customer reviews, written by people who bought a policy on the site, with a separate rating for how the claim went. No markup: the price is the insurer’s filed rate. Phones 8 am to 10 pm Eastern, seven days. The Zero Complaint Service: Squaremouth’s claims advocates give free support through the claims process, from documentation to a review of a denied claim and mediation if you appeal. BBB A+.

Good for

  • Anyone who wants the most insurers and the most reviews on one screen.
  • A traveler who wants a claims advocate in their corner if a claim is denied.
  • Phone help in the evening and at the weekend.

Skip it if

  • You want Travel Guard, Nationwide, Allianz or American Express: none of them is on the shelf.
  • You want advice before the quote screen. Squaremouth shows you everything and ranks nothing for your situation.

Know this: Squaremouth founded Tin Leg in 2014 and sells it alongside the others; Tin Leg plans sit at the top of the default sort.

Widest shelf and the longest track record

2. InsureMyTrip

Insurers18incl. Travel Guard, Nationwide
Reviews100,000+customer reviews
Denied claimAnytime Advocateshelp with appeals
Phones8 am to 7 pm ETweekdays

Founded June 2000, the first travel insurance comparison site. 18 insurers, including Travel Guard and Nationwide, which the Squaremouth-based sites do not carry, plus Medjet. More than 100,000 customer reviews. Anytime Advocates, part of its customer care team, stay in contact with the insurer during a claim and help start an appeal if a claim is denied. Phones weekdays 8 am to 7 pm Eastern, with customer care six days a week by its own description. BBB A+, accredited since 2003.

Good for

  • Anyone who wants Travel Guard or Nationwide priced next to the others.
  • A traveler who likes a long-running company with a named claims advocate.

Skip it if

  • You want weekend phone help: the phones are weekdays only.
  • You cancel policies often: some plans on the site keep a non-refundable administrative fee, and the free look is usually up to 10 days.

Know this: InsureMyTrip sells its own IMT Travel Accident Plan as an add-on and says itself that it does not recommend it over the insurers’ plans.

Best if you want a licensed agent's picks on top of Squaremouth's engine (this is us)

3. CoverTrip

Insurers20Squaremouth’s shelf
ReviewsSquaremouth’son the comparison
Denied claimZero Complaint Servicethrough Squaremouth
PhonesSquaremouth’s line8 am to 10 pm ET, 7 days

CoverTrip’s comparison is powered by Squaremouth. That means the same 20 insurers, the same filed prices, the same verified reviews, and the same Zero Complaint Service: our partner Squaremouth’s claims advocates take up a denied claim for you. If you only want the engine, Squaremouth is the bigger site and we would not argue. What we add is the advice. A licensed travel insurance agent since 2006 ranks the plans for five kinds of traveler, with real prices re-run every month in our Price Index; writes the reviews, including the companies that are not on the engine, so you can compare Allianz, Travel Guard, TravelSafe and American Express on your own; and answers the questions a quote screen cannot, like whether you need the plan at all. The writing is checked against the policy documents, not the insurers’ marketing.

Good for

  • A first-time buyer who wants to be told which plan and why, then price it.
  • A traveler over 65, a family or a cruise passenger who wants the shortlist before the quote.
  • Anyone who would rather watch than read: the same advice is on video.

Skip it if

  • You want the biggest site with the most people answering the phone. That is Squaremouth, and we send you there for the phones anyway.
  • You want Travel Guard or Nationwide priced: they are not on our shelf either.

Know this: We are small. The reviews on our comparison are Squaremouth’s, the phones are Squaremouth’s, and the default sort on our quote screen is the same as Squaremouth’s, so Tin Leg sits at the top there too. We earn a commission when you buy; it does not change the price.

A solid fourth with a shorter shelf

4. TravelInsurance.com

Insurers12incl. Travel Guard, Travelex, AXA
Reviews120,000+five-star, by its count
Denied claimNot publishedon its site
Phones9 am to 8 pm ETweekdays

Twelve insurers, including Travel Guard, Travelex and AXA. More than 120,000 five-star reviews, by its own count. Phones weekdays 9 am to 8 pm Eastern. Prices are the filed rates, which the site states plainly.

Good for

  • A quick quote that includes Travel Guard.
  • A traveler who already knows the plan they want and finds it here.

Skip it if

  • You want the most choice: it carries fewer insurers than the other three.
  • You want a published claims-advocacy program: there is none on its site.

Know this: The site’s line that you will not find a lower price anywhere is true of every site, because the rates are filed.

Which site for your situation

You want the most choice on one screen

Squaremouth, or CoverTrip

Same 20 insurers on both. CoverTrip puts our picks in front of the quote screen; Squaremouth has the bigger phone team behind it.

You want Travel Guard or Nationwide priced next to the others

InsureMyTrip

They are not on the Squaremouth-based sites. TravelInsurance.com has Travel Guard but not Nationwide.

You want someone to tell you which plan before you price it

CoverTrip

The best plans pages rank the plans for five kinds of traveler with real monthly prices, then send you to the same quote screen.

A claim was denied

Any of the first three

Squaremouth and CoverTrip through the Zero Complaint Service, InsureMyTrip through Anytime Advocates. Keep the denial letter and every receipt. Our claims guide walks through it.

You want Allianz or American Express

None of the four

Both sell direct only. Read an independent review first; ours are on the Reviews page.

You just want the cheapest plan

Any site, same price

The price is the same on every site. Pick the site that shows you the medical limit next to the price, so cheap does not mean no medical coverage. Our cheapest plans worth buying page does that.

Questions people ask

Is Squaremouth legitimate?

Yes. Squaremouth is a licensed Florida agency founded in 2003 that sells plans from 20 insurers at the insurers’ filed rates, carries more than 201,000 verified customer reviews, and holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. It founded one of the insurers it sells, Tin Leg, in 2014, which is worth knowing when you see Tin Leg at the top of the results.

Squaremouth vs InsureMyTrip: which is better?

Squaremouth for the most insurers and reviews on one screen and phones seven days a week; InsureMyTrip for Travel Guard and Nationwide, which Squaremouth does not carry, and for the longest track record. The price of any plan both sites carry is identical on both.

Is travel insurance cheaper on a comparison site?

No, and it is not more expensive either. Travel insurance rates are filed with state regulators, so a plan costs the same on a comparison site as from the insurer. Comparison sites earn a commission from the insurer; it is not added to your price.

Which travel insurance comparison site has the most insurers?

Squaremouth and CoverTrip carry 20 insurers (CoverTrip runs on Squaremouth’s engine). InsureMyTrip carries 18, including Travel Guard and Nationwide, which the other two do not. TravelInsurance.com carries 12.

What is the Zero Complaint Service?

Every travel insurance policy purchased through CoverTrip is backed by the Zero Complaint Service, offered by our partner Squaremouth, which provides free claims advocacy support throughout the claims process. This includes escalated claims support, documentation assistance, review and clarity on denied claims, and claims mediation if you wish to appeal a denied claim. The service is provided by Squaremouth’s claims advocates, not by CoverTrip.

Does CoverTrip have its own insurance plans?

No. CoverTrip sells the plans on Squaremouth’s comparison and earns a commission from the insurer when you buy. We do not sell a plan of our own, and no insurer pays to be ranked.

Can a comparison site pay my claim?

No. The insurer pays the claim. What a comparison site can do is take up a denied claim with the insurer for you: Squaremouth and CoverTrip through the Zero Complaint Service, InsureMyTrip through its Anytime Advocates.
