Annual Travel Insurance: The Complete Guide

In shortAnnual travel insurance is one policy for every trip you take in a year, built around emergency medical and evacuation with a cap on each trip's length. It is a good buy at three or more trips a year. It mostly does not cover trip cancellation, so an expensive prepaid trip still wants its own package plan.

Annual travel insurance is one policy for every trip you take in a year. It is built around the medical side of travel, emergency medical and evacuation, and it is a good buy for someone who takes three or more trips a year. What it mostly does not do is cover trip cancellation, so an expensive prepaid trip still wants its own package plan.

This guide covers what an annual plan does and does not cover, the annual plans we point people to with their limits checked, how they compare with a single-trip package plan, who should buy one, and what it costs.

What annual travel insurance covers

Every annual plan covers emergency medical and evacuation on every trip in the year, up to a limit on the length of each trip. Most carry travel delay and baggage benefits. The differences are on cancellation, which is small, an add-on, or missing, and on the medical limit, which runs from $20,000 to $1,000,000. Two things decide whether an annual plan is right: how many trips you take, and how much prepaid money is at risk on each.

Allianz AllTrips Prime $20,000 $100,000 $3,000 per year Up to 45 days each The cheapest way to get year-round medical and evacuation with a little cancellation.

For most frequent travelers the choice is Seven Corners for the medical numbers or Allianz AllTrips Executive for a plan that also carries some cancellation and rental car coverage. Travel Insured is the low-cost way to get $100,000 of medical on every trip.

Annual plan vs single-trip plan

Annual plan Single-trip package plan
Trip cancellation None, or a small yearly cap ($3,000 to $10,000), or an add-on bought per trip 100 percent of the insured trip cost
Emergency medical $20,000 to $1,000,000 by plan $10,000 to $500,000 by plan
Evacuation $100,000 to $1,000,000 by plan $50,000 to $1,000,000 by plan
Trip length Capped per trip, usually 30 to 60 days Up to the plan’s maximum, often 90 to 180 days
Cancel For Any Reason No Available as an upgrade on many plans
Pre-existing condition waiver Varies; Allianz waives with continuous coverage or purchase within 14 days of a trip payment Yes on 53 of 54 plans, within 14 days of the first payment
How it is priced One price for the year, by age By trip cost, trip length and ages
Best for The medical side of every trip in a year One expensive prepaid trip

Who should buy annual travel insurance

You What to buy
Three or more trips a year, most of them short, little prepaid An annual plan. The medical and evacuation coverage is the point; cancellation is not.
Several trips a year plus one big prepaid trip (a cruise, a tour) An annual plan for the year and a single-trip package plan for the big trip, so the full trip cost is covered.
One or two trips a year Single-trip package plans. An annual plan does not pay for itself.
Frequent business travel An annual plan; Allianz AllTrips Executive adds rental car and business equipment coverage.
Over 70 Check the medical limit at your age before anything else. Seven Corners drops from $1,000,000 to $100,000 at 70 and stops at 79.

The rule of thumb: an annual plan protects your health on every trip, a single-trip plan protects your money on one trip. Frequent travelers often need both, and it costs less than it sounds because the annual plan is priced by the year, not by the trip cost.

How much annual travel insurance costs

Annual plans are priced per person for the year, by age, not by trip cost. Travel Insured’s Annual Multi-Trip Protector is $94 for an adult and $64 for a child. The plans with $1,000,000 of medical or a cancellation cap cost more, and the price rises with age. Compare it against what you would pay for three single-trip plans on the medical side; for most people who travel that often, the annual plan wins. Where the annual plan loses is cancellation: nothing on it replaces 100 percent of a $6,000 cruise.

Before you buy

  1. Count the trips. Three or more in the next twelve months, and an annual plan earns its keep. Fewer, and single-trip plans cover more for the money.
  2. Check the trip-length cap. 45 days on most plans, 30 to 60 on Seven Corners. A long stay abroad needs a travel medical plan built for it.
  3. Check the medical limit at your age. Some plans cut it sharply at 65 or 70.
  4. Buy a single-trip plan for the big prepaid trip. The annual plan does not cover the cruise fare; a package plan does, and it can carry Cancel For Any Reason and the pre-existing waiver if bought within 14 days of the first payment. The beginner’s guide has the method.
  5. Renew without a gap. On Allianz the pre-existing waiver depends on continuous coverage, so renew within seven days of the old policy ending.

Annual travel insurance FAQs

What is annual travel insurance?

One policy that covers every trip you take in a year, with a limit on how long each trip can be (usually 30 to 60 days). It is built around emergency medical and evacuation coverage. Cancellation coverage is small, an add-on, or absent.

Does annual travel insurance cover trip cancellation?

Mostly no, or only a little. Allianz AllTrips Prime carries $3,000 a year and Executive $5,000 to $10,000 a year; Travel Insured sells cancellation as a per-trip add-on; Travel Guard and Seven Corners annual plans carry interruption but no cancellation. A single-trip package plan covers 100 percent of the trip cost.

How much does annual travel insurance cost?

It is priced per person for the year, by age. Travel Insured’s Annual Multi-Trip Protector is $94 for an adult and $64 for a child. The plans with higher medical limits and cancellation caps cost more. Most people pay less for an annual plan than for three single-trip plans.

Is annual travel insurance worth it?

If you take three or more trips a year and your main worry is a hospital bill abroad, usually yes. If you take one or two trips, or your trips are expensive and prepaid, a single-trip package plan covers more for the money.

How long can each trip be on an annual plan?

It depends on the plan: 45 days on the Allianz and Travel Insured plans, 30, 45 or 60 days on Seven Corners. A trip longer than the cap is not covered past it.

Does an annual plan cover pre-existing conditions?

It varies. Allianz waives the exclusion if you keep continuous coverage year to year or buy within 14 days of a trip payment. Seven Corners pays a limited amount for a sudden flare-up of a known condition. Travel Insured requires the cancellation add-on for the waiver. A single-trip package plan bought within 14 days of the first payment waives it on 53 of 54 plans.

Can I buy an annual plan and a single-trip plan?

Yes, and for a frequent traveler with one big prepaid trip it is the right combination: the annual plan covers the medical side all year, the single-trip plan covers the full cost of the expensive trip.
