Does travel insurance cover death in the family?

In shortYes. The death of a family member is a covered reason on every plan in our library: trip cancellation refunds the trip if it happens before you leave, trip interruption pays the unused part and the flight home if it happens while you are away. The lists of who counts are long (spouse, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws, step and adopted relations, usually a domestic partner and a caregiver) and apply to your traveling companion's family too. A death from a known illness is paid on most plans; Nationwide and AXA apply the pre-existing rule to relatives at home, which the waiver fixes. Friends and pets are not on any list.

What the plans say

The death of a family member is a covered reason on every plan in our library, for both benefits that matter here. Trip cancellation refunds the non-refundable trip payments if the death happens before you leave. Trip interruption pays the unused part of the trip and the extra cost of getting home, on most plans up to 150 percent of the trip cost, if the death happens while you are away. Both keep to the same three conditions: the person has to be a family member as the plan defines the term, the death has to happen after the plan’s effective date, and, on a few plans, the death cannot be the result of a condition that was already being treated when you bought.

Who counts as family

The definitions are long and closer to each other than they used to be. All of the plans in our library cover a spouse, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and the in-law, step and adopted versions of those. Most add a domestic partner, a legal guardian or ward, and a caregiver. Nationwide, AXA and a few others add a business partner. Travelex and GoReady add an ex-spouse and a fiance. Nearly every plan applies the list to your traveling companion’s family as well as your own, so a companion’s parent counts.

Two people are also covered on many plans without being family: a business partner, and the host at your destination, meaning the person whose home you were going to stay in. Nationwide, AXA, IMG, WorldTrips, Berkshire Hathaway and Arch RoamRight all list the host; Tin Leg Gold and Seven Corners do not.

The pre-existing condition question

This is the part most articles get wrong, and it matters most to people with elderly or ill relatives. Whether a death from a known illness is covered depends on whose condition the plan’s pre-existing rule reaches.

On Tin Leg, Seven Corners, Travelex, GoReady and IMG, the rule applies to you, your traveling companion and a family member booked to travel with you. A parent at home who dies of a condition they were being treated for is outside it, and the claim is paid. On Nationwide and AXA, the definition names any family member, so the same death can be declined if the parent was treated for that condition in the 60 days before you bought.

The way to make the question go away on every plan is the pre-existing condition waiver: buy within 14 to 21 days of your first trip payment and insure the full non-refundable trip cost. The waiver removes the look-back for everyone the plan names. The pre-existing conditions answer has the windows plan by plan.

What the claim needs

A copy of the death certificate, or an obituary or funeral home letter while the certificate is being issued. Something that shows the relationship if the surnames differ: a birth or marriage certificate is usually enough. Your trip invoices and the cancellation confirmations showing what the airline, cruise line or tour operator refunded. If you came home early, the receipts for the new flights. Call the assistance line before you rebook if you can; it can arrange the flight, and a flight the insurer arranged is the easiest kind to claim. The claims guide walks through the filing.

When the person is not on the list

A best friend, a neighbor, a colleague or a pet is not a family member on any plan, however close. The only benefit that refunds a trip cancelled for their death is cancel for any reason coverage, 75 percent of the trip cost on most plans, which has to be added within 14 to 21 days of your first trip payment and usually requires cancelling at least two days before departure. The cancel for any reason guide lists the plans.

Questions people also ask

My mother has been ill for years. If she dies before the trip, is the cancellation covered?

On most plans, yes, because the pre-existing condition rule on Tin Leg, Seven Corners, Travelex, GoReady and IMG applies only to people booked to travel with you. Nationwide and AXA apply it to any family member, so on those two the death from a condition she was treated for in the look-back period could be declined unless you bought within the waiver window. Buying within the window (14 to 21 days from your first trip payment) removes the question on every plan.

What about a close friend, or a pet?

Not covered as a family death on any plan. The list is relatives by blood, marriage and adoption, plus a domestic partner, a caregiver and, on some plans, a business partner. For anyone outside it, cancel for any reason coverage is the only benefit that refunds the trip.

Is a death from suicide covered?

Do not assume either way. Every plan has a general exclusion for suicide and self-inflicted injury, written with the insured person in mind but sitting in the list that applies to any loss, and insurers read the cause of death on the certificate. Call the plan’s claims line and ask before you cancel; the answer differs by insurer and by state.

Can I claim for the flight home and then go back to finish the trip?

Yes. Trip interruption pays the unused portion of the trip and the extra transportation home; most plans (Seven Corners, Nationwide, Generali, Travel Insured, IMG, WorldTrips and Berkshire Hathaway among them) also pay a one-way economy fare to rejoin the trip after the funeral, up to the interruption limit.
