What’s the difference between 24-hour AD&D and Flight Accident AD&D?

Accidental Death and Dismemberment, or AD&D, coverage pays an indemnity (a lump sum payment) up to the amount defined in the policy for the loss of life or functioning limbs to you or your beneficiary(ies).

Death benefits are paid at 100% of the policy limit; dismemberment benefits are paid at a percentage for one loss and increase for multiple losses up to 100% of the policy limit. Loss of life benefits are paid in addition to any benefits paid by other life insurance plans.

There are two types of AD&D

Travel insurance has two different types of AD&D coverage, each of which covers accidents that occur during a covered trip or during the flight portion of a covered trip:

  • 24-hour AD&D – this protection provides coverage in the event you are injured or lose your life in an accident any time during your travel. This is continuous AD&D coverage from the time you leave on your scheduled departure date to the time you get back home (and for 180-365 days after, depending on the plan). This coverage is inclusive of accidents that occur while you are traveling in a plane on a covered trip. See the full explanation of Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage, including the policy limits for each travel insurance company.
  • Flight accident AD&D – this protection provides coverage in the event you are injured or lose your life while riding as a passenger in an aircraft. It also covers boarding and alighting from aircraft. This coverage is isolated to air travel only, and it is sometimes offered as an optional upgrade. Some travel insurance companies offer flight accident as a standalone plan as well. See the full explanation of Flight Accident coverage, including the policy limits for each travel insurance company.

Comprehensive AD&D, that is 24-hour AD&D, provides coverage for unfortunate travel accidents that can mean permanent disability or death; flight accident AD&D is focuses its protection on accidents that are directly related to air travel. This means the latter won’t provide benefits if the traveler is injured or killed during the non flight portion of their trip.
