Allianz vs Travel Guard: Which Travel Insurance Is Better?
Allianz and Travel Guard sell to the same traveler and answer the same question differently: Allianz puts its money into the free-kids rule on Prime and Premier, Travel Guard into Deluxe’s $150,000 of medical and $1,000,000 of evacuation. This page puts the plans side by side from the insurers’ own plan documents, says which one wins for each kind of trip, and shows the numbers that decide it.
The plans side by side
| Plan | Emergency medical | Evacuation | Cancel for any reason | Pre-existing waiver window | Kids free |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Allianz OneTrip Basic | $10,000 | $50,000 | No | 14 days | No |
| Allianz OneTrip Prime | $50,000 | $500,000 | Cancel Anytime upgrade, 80% back | 14 days | Yes |
| Allianz OneTrip Premier | $75,000 | $1,000,000 | Cancel Anytime upgrade, 80% back | 14 days | Yes |
| Travel Guard Essential | $15,000 | $150,000 | No | 15 days | One per adult |
| Travel Guard Preferred | $50,000 | $500,000 | Upgrade, about 50% back | 15 days | One per adult |
| Travel Guard Deluxe | $150,000 | $1,000,000 | Upgrade, about 50% back | 15 days | One per adult |
Limits are per person. Read the medical column first: it is the one that separates these two companies, and it is the one that pays the bill that can pass $100,000. The Allianz review and the Travel Guard review go plan by plan.
Where each one wins
| The trip or the traveler | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A cruise or a trip outside the US | Travel Guard Deluxe | $150,000 of medical and $1,000,000 of evacuation. Allianz tops out at $75,000 of medical on Premier. |
| A domestic trip with children | Allianz OneTrip Prime | Children 17 and under are free, and $50,000 of medical is enough where your health insurance works. Travel Guard gives one free child per adult, which is the same for a family of four. |
| Cancel for any reason | Allianz | Cancel Anytime refunds 80 percent on Prime and Premier. Travel Guard’s upgrade refunds about 50 percent. |
| A traveler with a pre-existing condition | Either, bought early | Both waive the exclusion when you buy within the window: 14 days at Allianz, 15 at Travel Guard, with the full trip cost insured. |
| A cheap domestic trip with nothing much at stake | Allianz OneTrip Basic | $10,000 of medical and $50,000 of evacuation is thin, but on a refundable-hotel weekend it is the cheaper policy. Do not take it abroad. |
| Price | Neither, until you compare | Both sell only direct. Enter the trip once on the comparison and see the plans that carry Deluxe-level limits, at the same price as buying direct. |
The numbers that decide it
Medical and evacuation. Allianz’s best plan, OneTrip Premier, carries $75,000 of medical and $1,000,000 of evacuation; Travel Guard’s best, Deluxe, carries $150,000 and $1,000,000. For a trip outside the US the floor is $100,000 of medical and $250,000 of evacuation; for a cruise, a remote trip or a traveler over 65, $250,000 and $500,000.
Cancel for any reason. Allianz: Cancel Anytime, Allianz’s version of cancel for any reason, refunds 80 percent of the trip cost, the highest share on the market, on OneTrip Prime and Premier only; it has to be added when you buy. Travel Guard: Cancel for any reason is an upgrade on Preferred and Deluxe, refunds about 50 percent (most of the market pays 75), must be added within 15 days of the first payment, and requires cancelling more than two days before departure.
Pre-existing conditions. Allianz: The pre-existing condition waiver applies when you buy within 14 days of the first trip payment. Travel Guard: The pre-existing condition waiver applies when you buy within 15 days of the first trip payment and insure the full trip cost.
Children. Allianz: Children 17 and under are free on OneTrip Prime and Premier (not for Pennsylvania residents). Travel Guard: One child 17 and under is free per paying adult on all three plans; the child must be related to and traveling with that adult.
Free look. Allianz: 15 days after purchase for a full refund if the trip has not started. Travel Guard: 15 days after purchase for a full refund if you have not departed or filed a claim.

Neither Allianz nor Travel Guard is on the CoverTrip comparison; both sell only direct. Travel insurance is priced by the trip cost, the ages of the travelers and the trip length, and a package plan usually costs 4 to 8 percent of the trip cost, so the way to compare these two is to enter the trip once, note the price of a plan with the limits you need, and hold each company’s direct quote against it. Same price on the comparison as buying direct.
What the plans say
Allianz’s strengths are the free-kids rule on Prime and Premier, an 80 percent Cancel Anytime refund, annual plans and a standalone rental car plan; its weak spot is the medical limits: $50,000 on Prime and $75,000 on Premier, thin for a cruise or a trip abroad. Travel Guard’s strengths are Deluxe’s $150,000 of medical and $1,000,000 of evacuation, one free child per adult on every plan, a large assistance operation behind it (AIG); its weak spot is a cancel for any reason refund of about 50 percent, and thin medical on Essential and Preferred for a trip abroad. Both refund 100 percent of the insured trip cost for a listed cancellation reason, both include a 24-hour assistance line, and both are underwritten by large insurers; the difference between them is the limits and the upgrade rules above, not the paper.
Questions people also ask
Is Allianz or Travel Guard better for a cruise?
Travel Guard Deluxe. A cruise wants $100,000 or more of medical and $250,000 or more of evacuation, and Deluxe carries $150,000 and $1,000,000. Allianz OneTrip Premier carries $75,000 and $1,000,000, and Prime $50,000 and $500,000, so the medical side is the problem on a ship far from a hospital.
Which is cheaper, Allianz or Travel Guard?
For the same trip, Allianz OneTrip Basic is usually the cheapest policy either company sells, and it carries $10,000 of medical. Plan for plan, Allianz Prime and Travel Guard Preferred are close, and both give free children on a family trip. Neither is on the comparison, so the only way to see them priced next to the market is to run the trip there and compare the limits.
Which has the better cancel for any reason?
Allianz. Cancel Anytime refunds 80 percent of the trip cost on OneTrip Prime and Premier. Travel Guard’s upgrade refunds about 50 percent, must be added within 15 days of the first payment, and requires cancelling more than two days before departure. Most plans on the comparison refund 75 percent.
