Read the medical column, not the plan name. Luxury is the floor for a trip abroad; Gold or Silver for a cruise.
Top reasons to buy
- Gold carries $500,000 of primary emergency medical, one of the highest limits sold to leisure travelers. Silver and Adventure carry $1,000,000 of evacuation.
- Cancellation is 100 percent of the trip cost on every plan, and interruption is 150 percent on all but Economy.
- Cancel for any reason at 75 percent is available on Luxury, Adventure, Silver and Gold.
- Sold on the comparison engine, so you can see each Tin Leg plan priced next to 20 other companies.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Nine plans is a lot. Economy, Standard and Basic look similar on a quote and differ mainly in medical limits, waiver windows and free-look periods.
- Economy has $20,000 of medical, no pre-existing condition waiver and no cancel-for-any-reason option.
- Underwriters vary by plan (Berkshire Hathaway Specialty, Starr, Spinnaker), so the plan document is the thing to read, not the brand.
Bottom line
Tin Leg is Squaremouth’s own brand, and the range is its strength: there is a Tin Leg plan for nearly every trip and budget. Luxury is the plan most people buy and a fair pick for a trip abroad. Gold is the one to price for a cruise or anywhere with expensive hospitals. Economy is a domestic budget plan. Because the tiers are priced close together, look at the medical column on the quote rather than the plan name.

How to choose between them
On a quote the Tin Leg plans are often priced within a few dollars of each other, which makes the names unhelpful. Read the medical column. For a domestic trip where your health insurance travels with you, Basic or Standard is enough. For a trip abroad, Luxury’s $100,000 of primary medical is the floor I would accept. For a cruise or a remote destination, Gold or Silver. If you are doing anything a standard plan would call hazardous, Adventure.
Cancel for any reason
Cancel for any reason is available as an upgrade on Luxury, Adventure, Silver and Gold. It pays 75 percent of the non-refundable trip cost, has to be bought within the window stated in the plan document (14 days on Gold), requires you to insure the full trip cost, and requires you to cancel at least two days before departure. Economy, Standard, Basic and Platinum do not offer it.
Pre-existing conditions and the free look
The pre-existing condition waiver window is 14 or 15 days from your initial deposit depending on the plan, and Economy has no waiver at all. The free look is 10 to 15 days depending on the plan, during which you can cancel for a full refund if you have not departed or filed a claim. Because the underwriter changes by plan, read the plan document for the one you buy.
How much does Tin Leg cost?
Tin Leg is priced to compete on the engine, which is why it sells well. The lower tiers are usually among the cheapest plans on a quote, and Luxury and Gold tend to land in the middle for limits that are near the top. Price your trip and compare the medical column before the price column.
