Choice is the plan to price first. Travel LX is the upgrade when you want the biggest medical limit and cancel for any reason in one plan. Skip Essential for anything outside the US.

IMG is International Medical Group, based in Indianapolis and owned by SiriusPoint. It has sold travel insurance since 1990. Its trip plans are called iTravelInsured. The comparison sells five of them.
- Essential is a cancellation-only plan. It pays 100 percent of the trip cost if you cancel for a covered reason and 125 percent if the trip is interrupted, plus travel delay. It has no emergency medical and no evacuation, so it is a domestic plan.
- Choice is the plan most people buy. It has $100,000 of primary medical, $500,000 of medical evacuation, $100,000 of non-medical evacuation, and the pre-existing condition waiver if you buy within 20 days of your first deposit.
- Choice Cruise is Choice with cruise extras: missed connection for cruises and tours, and $250 of sports equipment delay. It costs a little more.
- Travel LX Basic has the big limits of Travel LX ($500,000 primary medical, $1,000,000 evacuation) but no pre-existing condition waiver and no cancel for any reason.
- Travel LX is the top plan. Same big limits, the waiver if you buy within the window, and cancel for any reason included at 75 percent of the trip cost. It also includes $40,000 of rental car damage and interruption for any reason.
What the plans cover
All five plans pay 100 percent of your trip cost if you cancel for a covered reason. Choice, Choice Cruise and both Travel LX plans pay 150 percent if the trip is interrupted. Essential pays 125 percent.
The medical on Choice and Travel LX is primary. That means IMG pays first and does not send you to your health plan at home. Choice pays $1,000 per person for travel delay after six hours, $300 for delayed bags after six hours, and $1,000 for lost bags. Travel LX pays $2,500 for delay, $500 for delayed bags and $2,500 for lost bags.
Hurricanes: Choice and Travel LX cover a common carrier delay of six hours, a mandatory evacuation, and your hotel or rental being made uninhabitable. You have to buy before the storm is named.
Financial default of a tour company or cruise line is covered on Choice after a 14-day wait if you buy within the window, and on Travel LX after a 30-day wait. Employment layoff is covered on Choice after a 30-day wait and on Travel LX after 14 days, if you have had the job for a year.
Cancel for any reason
This is the one thing to know before you pick a plan. Choice, Choice Cruise, Essential and Travel LX Basic do not offer cancel for any reason. Not as an add-on, not at all. Travel LX includes it, at 75 percent of your trip cost, and you have to buy the plan within 19 days of your first deposit for it to apply. It also has to be used at least two days before you leave.
Travel LX also includes interruption for any reason. That pays 75 percent if you cut a trip short for a reason the plan would not normally cover, starting 48 hours after you leave.
Pre-existing conditions
Choice, Choice Cruise and Essential include the pre-existing condition waiver if you buy within 20 days of your first trip deposit and insure your full trip cost. Travel LX gives you 19 days. Travel LX Basic has no waiver and a 60-day look-back. If you are past the window, the comparison will show the waiver as not available, and you should look at a company with a longer window or accept the look-back.

Choice was the cheapest plan with $100,000 of primary medical on the couple's trip. Travel LX costs about three and a half times as much, but it includes cancel for any reason, which is a 40 to 50 percent add-on with most other companies.
Who IMG is
IMG has sold travel medical insurance for 35 years, and it still sells stand-alone medical plans (Patriot and GlobeHopper) alongside the iTravelInsured trip plans. SiriusPoint bought the company and owns it outright. On the comparison IMG has a 4.2 out of 5 customer rating from 3,379 reviews.
