WorldTrips Travel Insurance Review

★★★★★4 out of 5

Three clear plans from a Tokio Marine company rated A++. Explore and Elevate are the ones to look at. Cancel for any reason is only 50 percent here.

Good for
  • Trips abroad where a strong underwriter matters: every plan is on Tokio Marine HCC, rated A++ by AM Best
  • Anyone who wants big evacuation limits: Explore carries $750,000 and Elevate $1,000,000
  • Anyone who likes three plans that are easy to tell apart
Not for
  • Anyone who wants cancel for any reason at 75 percent, since WorldTrips pays 50 percent on the comparison
  • Anyone buying Escape for a trip abroad, since its $50,000 medical is secondary and its waiver window is short
  • Anyone who needs non-medical evacuation (political or natural disaster), which none of the three plans include

Atlas Journey Elevate$250,000 primary$1,000,000Add-on, 50% back20 days

Explore is the plan to price first. Elevate adds $100,000 of medical and $250,000 of evacuation for about $30 more on our test trip. Escape is a domestic plan.

Top reasons to buy

  • All three plans are underwritten by Tokio Marine HCC's U.S. Specialty Insurance Company, rated A++ (Superior) by AM Best. That is the top rating on the comparison.
  • Explore and Elevate carry primary medical and $750,000 or $1,000,000 of evacuation.
  • Travel delay pays after five hours on Explore and Elevate, sooner than most plans.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Cancel for any reason pays 50 percent of the trip cost on the comparison, not the 75 percent most companies pay.
  • Escape's medical is secondary and only $50,000. It is not built for a trip abroad.
  • No non-medical evacuation on any plan, and Explore and Elevate cost more than Travel Insured FlexiPAX and IMG Choice on our test trips.

Bottom line

A good company with a great underwriter and two solid plans. Buy Explore or Elevate if the A++ rating and the big evacuation limits matter to you. If you want cancel for any reason, price Travel Insured or Tin Leg first, because their 75 percent beats 50.

What WorldTrips sells on CoverTrip

WorldTrips is a Tokio Marine HCC company based in Carmel, Indiana, founded in 1998. It is best known for travel medical plans (Atlas Travel), and it sells trip plans under the Atlas Journey name. The comparison sells three of them.

What the plans cover

All three plans pay 100 percent of the trip cost if you cancel for a covered reason. Explore and Elevate pay 150 percent for interruption. Escape pays 125 percent.

Travel delay pays $2,000 per person on Explore and Elevate after five hours ($150 and $200 a day). Escape pays $500 after six hours. Baggage delay is $300 on Explore and $600 on Elevate after 12 hours. Lost bags are $1,500 on Explore and $2,500 on Elevate. Missed connection pays $1,000 on Explore and $1,500 on Elevate after three hours.

Hurricanes: all three cover a common carrier delay of 12 hours and your lodging being made uninhabitable. Explore and Elevate also cover a mandatory evacuation. You have to buy before the storm is named.

Financial default of a travel supplier is covered on Explore and Elevate after a 14-day wait if you buy within the waiver window. It is not listed on Escape. Employment layoff is covered on all three after 30 days if you have had the job for a year. Terrorism is covered on all three, at home and abroad.

Cancel for any reason

Explore and Elevate offer cancel for any reason as an add-on. On the comparison it pays 50 percent of your trip cost, and you have to buy it within the same window as the waiver. On our couple's trip to Italy it took Explore from $668 to $1,008 and Elevate from $701 to $1,034. That is a lot to pay for half your money back. If cancel for any reason is the reason you are buying, Travel Insured, Tin Leg, Seven Corners and IMG Travel LX all pay 75 percent.

Pre-existing conditions

All three plans include the pre-existing condition waiver if you buy in time and insure your full trip cost. WorldTrips says 21 days from your first deposit on Explore and Elevate, and 14 days on Escape. The comparison shows the exact last day for your trip.

What it costs

Real prices from the CoverTrip comparison on 25 September 2026, for three test trips. Your price depends on your ages, trip cost and dates.

Elevate was only $33 more than Explore on the couple's trip, for $100,000 more medical and $250,000 more evacuation. If you are buying WorldTrips, that is the better buy.
