Allianz vs Travel Insured: Which Travel Insurance Is Better?

In shortTravel Insured's Worldwide Trip Protector Deluxe is the better buy for nearly every trip: $250,000 of medical and $500,000 of evacuation against $50,000 and $500,000 on Allianz OneTrip Prime, with children 17 and under free on both, so Allianz's family advantage disappears. Allianz keeps two edges: an 80 percent Cancel Anytime refund against 75, and a 14-day waiver window against a window that depends on the plan document. Travel Insured is on the comparison; Allianz is not.

Allianz and Travel Insured sell to the same traveler and answer the same question differently: Allianz puts its money into the free-kids rule on Prime and Premier, Travel Insured into Deluxe’s $250,000 of medical and $500,000 of evacuation at a mid-range price. This page puts the plans side by side from the insurers’ own plan documents, says which one wins for each kind of trip, and shows the numbers that decide it.

The numbers that decide it

Medical and evacuation. Allianz’s best plan, OneTrip Premier, carries $75,000 of medical and $1,000,000 of evacuation; Travel Insured’s best plan, Worldwide Trip Protector Platinum, carries $500,000 of medical and $1,000,000 of evacuation. For a trip outside the US the floor is $100,000 of medical and $250,000 of evacuation; for a cruise, a remote trip or a traveler over 65, $250,000 and $500,000.

Cancel for any reason. Allianz: Cancel Anytime, Allianz’s version of cancel for any reason, refunds 80 percent of the trip cost, the highest share on the market, on OneTrip Prime and Premier only; it has to be added when you buy. Travel Insured: Cancel for any reason is an upgrade on Deluxe and Platinum, refunds 75 percent, has to be added when you buy within the plan’s window (14 or 21 days from the initial deposit), and requires cancelling at least two days before departure; an Interruption For Any Reason upgrade at 75 percent comes with it.

What it costs

Allianz sells only direct and is not on the comparison. Travel Insured is on the CoverTrip comparison, priced next to the other plans when you enter the trip once. Travel insurance is priced by the trip cost, the ages of the travelers and the trip length, and a package plan usually costs 4 to 8 percent of the trip cost, so the way to compare these two is to enter the trip once, note the price of a plan with the limits you need, and hold Allianz’s direct quote against it. Same price on the comparison as buying direct.

What the plans say

Allianz’s strengths are the free-kids rule on Prime and Premier, an 80 percent Cancel Anytime refund, annual plans and a standalone rental car plan; its weak spot is the medical limits: $50,000 on Prime and $75,000 on Premier, thin for a cruise or a trip abroad. Travel Insured’s strengths are Deluxe’s $250,000 of medical and $500,000 of evacuation at a mid-range price, free children on Deluxe and Platinum, Platinum’s $500,000 of medical and $1,000,000 of evacuation; its weak spot is Essential’s $200,000 of evacuation and no cancel for any reason on it, which makes it a domestic-only budget plan. Both refund 100 percent of the insured trip cost for a listed cancellation reason, both include a 24-hour assistance line, and both are underwritten by large insurers; the difference between them is the limits and the upgrade rules above, not the paper.

Questions people also ask

Is Travel Insured better than Allianz?

For coverage, yes: Worldwide Trip Protector Deluxe carries $250,000 of medical against $50,000 on Allianz Prime, at a similar place in each lineup, and both give free children. Allianz’s remaining edges are an 80 percent Cancel Anytime refund and a fixed 14-day waiver window.

Which is better for a family, Allianz or Travel Insured?

Both make children 17 and under free (Allianz on Prime and Premier, Travel Insured on Deluxe and Platinum), so the choice comes down to the medical limit: $50,000 or $75,000 at Allianz, $250,000 or $500,000 at Travel Insured. For a domestic trip either works; for a trip abroad Travel Insured.

Does Travel Insured have cancel for any reason?

Yes, on Deluxe and Platinum, refunding 75 percent when added at purchase within the plan’s window (14 or 21 days from the initial deposit) and the trip is cancelled at least two days before departure. The same upgrade adds Interruption For Any Reason at 75 percent. Allianz’s Cancel Anytime refunds 80 percent on Prime and Premier.
